Today, lecture of Amelia Valcárcel, a pioneer in equality feminism, about “Ethics, religion and democracy”

Amelia Valcárcel.

Amelia Valcárcel, full university professor of Moral and Political Philosophy and member of the Spanish Council of State, visits the Universitat de València. She is regarded as the representative of the equality feminism theory and one of the pioneers in feminist ideology in Spain. Amelia Valcárcel gives the lecture “Ética, religión y democracia” this Thursday 20 November at 19:00 in the Centro Cultural La Nau (Aula Magna and Paraninfo).

Amelia Valcárcel (Madrid, 1950) has been the second woman in becoming a member of the Spanish Council of State and she is the vice-president of the Real Patronato del Museo de Prado. She was a finalist of the Premio Nacional de Ensayo twice with their books Hegel y la ética (1987) y Del miedo a la igualdad (1993). She is also the writer of La política de las mujeres (1997), Feminismo en el mundo global (2008) and more recently La memoria y el perdón (2010). 

The relation between Amelia Valcárcel, this full university professor of Moral and Political Philosophy of the Spanish National University of Distance Learning (UNED), and the Universitat de València has been really close. She studied Philosophy in this university and, since then, she has been involved in many conferences, lectures, seminars, etc. She is member of the advisory council for the collection “Feminismos” which is published by the Universitat de València in collaboration with the Cátedra Publications.

Amelia Valcárcel has participated in some years in the Universitat d’Estiu (Summer University) in Gandia. In 2003, she participated in the inaugural ceremony of the 20th year of this Universitat and because of this she became in the first woman who inaugurates this university.

The last visits of Amelia Valcárcel to our Universitat were in 2012 in the Colegio Mayor Rector Peset when she act as patroness with Celia Amorós of the “Círculo Feminista: Cultura por la Igualdad” and more recently in January 2013 in the Conèixer Day, which is organized by the SeDi Information and Promotion Service, aimed at guidance staff of secondary academic centres.

The lecture is included in the programme of the Claustre Obert of the Universitat de València, the discussion and reflection space created by the Universitat de València, through the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality and the newspaper El País, to analyse the more outstanding themes of currently social, cultural and economic situation.
