The Universitat de València is the first Spanish university in educational ranking which refers to sustainability and environment, according to “GreenMetric Ranking of World Universities” of Indonesia University. The academic institution spends, furthermore, the 19th position in the global classification of this area, in a ranking where 407 centre of higher education from more than 65 countries participated.
“GreenMetric Ranking of World Universities” mesures the universities’ environmental commitment and the sustainability in academic management. This way, the ranking establishes six indicator categories and give each one a percentage weight to determine the position in the global ranking: education (18%), energy and climate change (21%), waste management (18%), water usage (10%) and transports (18%).
At a global level, the Universitat de València has improved its position from 170 in 2014 to 152 in 2015. This fact involves a considerable improvement because the advance has been produced in a context in which the number of evaluated universities has increased from 360 to 407 of 65 countries in the last analysed term. Moreover, according to the ranking, the Universitat consolidates as the 10th centre of higher education, followed by the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha y la Universitat Jaume I
At a global level, the University of Nottingham, in United Kingdom, occupies the first position, followed by the University of Connecticut and University of California Davis, in United States.
In relation to educational ranking, the methodology has evaluated environment respect and sustainability in each centre through courses, funds dedicated to investigation, the number of publications and academic events, the number of students organizations and the existence of a site about sustainability.
The vice-principal of Academic Regulations of Universitat de València, Maria Vicenta Mestre, explains that this positioning shows that the bet of Universitat in terms of sustainability and environment in different areas of the institution has been appropriate, and motivates us to continue with the development of our Sustainable and healthy Campus.
The ranking of the Indonesia University is the first and only classification that measures university efforts in environmental sustainability and environmental respectful management politics. Its objective is to contribute to the increase the sustainability development knowledge and environment protection in society.
