The University celebrates the World Book Day with a conference on creation, technology and education

The Reading and Writing Club of the University of Valencia celebrates the World Book and Copyright Day with the I Book, Creation, Technology and Education Conference the days 9 and 10 April. The conference will host lectures by Silvestre Vilaplana, writer; Mª Carmen Cuartero, of the CEDRO association; and Llorenç Gómez, storyteller. There will be also a free literary reading.

The first of the lectures, entitled ‘Encouraging to read: (imp)ossible mission’, will be given by writer Silvestre Vilaplana and will take place at the Faculty of Teacher Training (PB-04 Room) on Wednesday, 9 April, at 12:00. This activity has the collaboration of Edicions Bromera.

Silvestre Vilaplana is a leading contemporary author who has successfully cultivated several genres, especially, poetry and novel. From the former, we can highlight his poetry books ‘Calendari de silencis’ (Miguel Hernández National Award of Poetry, 1000), ‘Deserts’ (Josep Maria Ribelles Award, 2004) and ‘Bagatge de tenebres’ (Ciutat de Torrent Award, 2007), among others. In fiction novels we can highlight the novels ‘La mirada d’Al-Azraq’ (Narrativa Jove Award, 1998) and ‘Els dimonis de Pandora’ (Bancaixa Award finalist, 1999), in literature aimed at young people; and ‘Les cendres del cavaller’ (Ciutat d’Alzira Award, 2003), which tells the biography of Joanot Martorell, author of Tirant lo Blanc, and ‘L’anell del pescador’ (2005) in literature for adults. He has also participated in the production of several scripts for television and in 2006 he received the Crítica Serra d’Or Award for his novel ‘Les cendres del cavaller’. In 2011, he received the Alfons el Magnànim Award for his novel ‘El quadern de les vides perdudes’.

In the afternoon, at 17:30, Mª Carmen Cuartero, of CEDRO (Spanish Centre for Reproduction Rights), an association responsible for the management of copyrights and of intellectual property of Spanish authors and publishers, will reflect on the research programme in classrooms which respect the intellectual property.

Free literary Reading

On Thursday, 10 April, at 11:00, there will be a free open literary reading. The people who participate will read excerpts which do not exceed three minutes.

The event, which will take place at the terrace of the María Moliner Library of Education, will begin with the open reading of excerpts by Jaime Pujol Reinés, coordinated by actress and director Rosanna Pastor.

Then, it will begin the free reading which will have a large number of confirmed participants, among other the coordinators of the Reading and Writing Club of the University of Valencia, Noelia Ibarra and Josep Ballester (one of the most renowned poets in the 80s generation and winner of prestigious awards for his work; the dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training, Manuel Monfort, author Manuel Molins, and vice-deans Dino Salinas and Rosa Giner; the secretary of the Faculty, Vicent Miralles; as well as writers Alexandre Bataller, winner of the Ciutat de València-Roís de Corella poetry award (2012) for ‘El llibre del Professor’ (Edicions Bromera, 2013) and Àngels Gregori, winner of the Jocs Florals of Barcelona this year.

The lectures will finish on Thursday afternoon, at 17:30, with the intervention of storyteller Llorenç Giménez, who will offer the talk ‘Narrative Techniques. From Storytelling to Written Tradition’ (PB-04 Room, Faculty of Teacher Training).

Llorenç Giménez is one of the most eminent storytellers in the current panorama. He also collaborates with the written press and television programmes for children. As an author of children’s literature, he has published more than 17 titles, and he has received the Empar de Lanuza award and the Crítica Serra d’Or of folktales.

All the events are part of the IV Complementary Activities Weeks of the Faculty of Teacher Training and they are organised with the collaboration of the Office of the Vice-Dean for Culture.
