The Governing Council of the Universitat de València has agreed to initiate the procedure to teach the Degree in Data Science. Nowadays none of the Spanish universities offers a similar degree. It responds to the professional and social demand in such important issue as Big Data. The Council has also approved today a plan to increase and improve the teaching in English.
The future Degree in Data Science has been introduced by the Vice-Principal for Studies and Scientific Policy, Isabel Vázquez, who has explained that there is an increasing social demand. “The Universitat de València gathers all the requirements to teach this multidisciplinary degree”, which will be taught in the School of Engineering.
According to the documentation provided, the amount of recorded data is doubled every two years and, in 2020, the forecasts indicates that we will have stored as much bits as stars in the Universe. “There’s a proven social and economic demand, with a growth trend in the forthcoming years, of professionals with the profile typical of a Degree in Data Science. This demand is expected to be sustainable, given the social trends and industrial/economic needs that are irrevocably being settled.
This project will benefit the general positioning of the Universitat de València in R+D tasks and cooperation with the company.

The Vice-Principal for International Relations and Cooperation, Guillermo Palao, has presented the plan to increase and improve the teaching in English. According to Palao, it is a voluntary pilot plan, in its first stage, which will try to know the starting point in order to improve the English skills of the teaching staff. This initiative is set up within the internationalisation strategy of the Universitat de València. And also the offer of international courses that the UV has offered for twenty years. This offer has been updated and increased.
The Universitat de València has achieved important milestones in the internationalisation field. One example is that it is still the third university in Europe regarding the reception of Erasmus students.
Degree Studies
The Vice-Principal for Academic Planning, Teaching and Sustainability, Maria Vicenta Mestre, has presented the offer of degrees and master’s degrees of the 2017/2018 academic year, which has been approved by a majority. And also the Teaching Management Plan for the next academic year, and the document of integral recognition criteria of the dedication of PDI.
Institutional condolence
In his report, the Principal has conveyed his institutional condolences on the recent death of the university community members. It is about the professor of the Department of Botany and Geology Ramón Figuerola Lamata; Alejandra Soler, teacher of the Second Republic, who received the Medal of the UV in September 2001 at FU; and the retired member of PAS Pepa Cuñat Edo.
