Vice-principal Antonio Ariño, awarded with the Order of Academic Palms by the French Culture Ministry

Antonio Ariño, vice-principal of Culture and Equality will be awarded, today Monday 7 July, with the Order of Academic Palms by the French Culture Ministry, in a ceremony which will take place in the headquarters of the French Institute of Valencia (calle Moro Zeit, 6), at 18:00 p.m. It is a recognition of the collaboration of the Valencian academic institution with the French Institute.

The decoration given to the Vice-principal Antonio Ariño, executive Vice President of the general Foundation of the UV, is the expression of the collective and in team effort by the UV, through the Vice-principal of Culture and Equality, in order to make the best of The French culture accessible to both the academic institution and society, from the commitment with critic and illustrated culture.

The Academic Palms are a French civil decoration which was created by Napoleon in 1808. In its origin, it was only an honorific tittle reserved to the University (to the lycées - French secondary schools) however nowadays it is a decoration widespread to other areas of the academic world.

Antonio Ariño’s decoration is a recognition given by the Government of the French Republic for the work carried out through the Vice-principal of Culture and Equality, which has allowed strengthening the links between France and the UV.

The Vice-principal will be given a medal with two olive trees and a purple ribbon, symbol of the Academic Palms. These trees represent the authority, the strength, the honour and dedication whilst the colour of the ribbon is associated with knowledge and wisdom.

Career
Antonio Ariño is a full university professor of Sociology at the UV. His research focuses on the field of Culture Sociology, Welfare Politics and Sociologic Theory He was awarded with the National Prize of Research with his work “La ciudad ritual” (Anthropos)- (The Ritual City).

 

He was a director of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology (1997-2003), vice-principal of Studies and Academic Organisation (2003-1998), vice-principal of European Convergence and Quality (2006-2010), and vice-principal of Planning and Equality (2010-2012). He was also vice-president of the Spanish Federation of Sociology.
