In accordance with its Statutes and as a public service, the University of Valencia offers its students essential courses, preparation for professional or artistic activities and, where appropriate, academic degrees. Faculty and staff are provided ongoing training at all levels.
In addition, the University of Valencia encourages the pursuit of new knowledge as well as scientific and technological development. It evaluates basic and applied research results, which are then transferred to productive sectors, thus contributing to technical progress and social and economic development.
Likewise, by assuring rationality and universality, the University of Valencia is an institution that diffuses culture and science at the heart of society by facilitating, boosting and welcoming intellectual and critical activities in all fields of culture and knowledge.
In order to fulfil these functions and in accordance with its Statutes, the UV is divided into departments, faculties, the School of Engineering, residence halls and all the facilities, services and units that are needed to meet its needs.
Departments are university entities responsible for organising and developing research, teaching and carrying out other university activities related to an area of knowledge or group of areas whose affinity or relation is justified from the scientific standpoint and under the criteria of effectiveness.
Besides diffusing culture, faculties and the School of Engineering are responsible for administrative management and the organisation of university courses leading to academic degrees.
University research institutes are mainly dedicated to scientific and technical research as well as artistic creation. They may also teach specialisations and PhD courses and offer technical guidance within their competence.
UV institutes conduct research in multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields of study and interdisciplinary structures (ERIs).
The UV Botanical Garden and the Astronomical Observatory are two extraordinary facilities for research, teaching and diffusion of culture in collaboration with departments, faculties/school or related services.
UV general services are functional units to help the University of Valencia meet its goals and are not limited to departments or faculties/school.
Residence halls are integrated into the University of Valencia, providing accommodation with priority given to members of the university community. Residents receive human, cultural and scientific education. Activities are at the service of the entire university community.
