Maritime Valencia Looks and Testimonies

Historic photographs of the maritime villages

 

The current exhibition shows the Valencian maritime history through 60 historical pictures distributed in five itineraries.

It start with the first photgraphic views, showing the first documentaries carreid out by José Martínez Sánchez and Antonio Cósmes on the occasion of the arrival of Isabel II to the port of Valencia in 1858, as well as immortalised popular portraits by Laurent house. The second itinerary is dedicated to collective imagery of activities and seafaring traditions, such as fishing, barracas or ribera carpenters. It is followed by the image of modernity, where is shown Valencian maritime transformation due to railway and tramway arrival, port construction, opening of new routes and industry establishment that gave a new modern picture.

The last two itineraries represent the urban scenes by showing urban landscape and its functions, streets and places as well as historical and singular building.. To conclude, the exhibition dedicates a section to the neighbourhood where the display is located, Natzaret. The only village of the maritime villages located in the right bank of the river Turia, what gives to the exhibition its special character, reflected in its history.
