Google Scholar Metrics (2017)

  • July 18th, 2017
Google Scholar

Google has published the 2017 version of Google Scholar Metrics, a ranking of scientific journals that allow consulting the visibility and influence of the newest academic publications. Thus, Google Scholar Metrics offers a list of the 100 main publications in 12 languages positioned according to two bibliometric indicators.

The fist bibliometric indicator is H5 Index, which consist of the H Index of the articles published in the last complete 5 years of the journal (2012-2016). The second indicator, H5 Median, corresponds to the publication and is the median of quotes of the articles included in the first indicator. Too see the quoted articles of the journal you only have to click on the first indicator.
The bibliometric data are generated from the quotes of all the indexed articles in Google Scholar (until June 2017). This search engine indexes academic publications that fulfil certain inclusion criteria.
Nevertheless, it is important to underline some limitations of Google Scholar Metrics. One of the main inconvenient is that only journals in English have the information separated in 8 thematic categories and more than 300 disciplines, while the data of journals in other languages are limited to the 100 main publications. Google also warns that the data and quotes recount are approximate and that a computer programme determines them automatically.
In addition, Google Scholar Metrics contains many publications that do not appear in the lists by language and/or by category. Publications with less than 100 articles or which have not received any quote (2012-2016) are excluded.
