Esteban Morcillo Sánchez

Principal of the University of Valencia

Born in Valencia 1951, he spent his childhood and adolescence in Oliva. Full university professor of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, he was elected Principal of the University of Valencia in the elections celebrated in 2010.

Academic training

Dr. Esteban Morcillo studied the Medicine degree in the University of Valencia, degree he obtained in 1974 and, in 1976, the doctorate in Medicine. Later, he obtained the Fulbright Commission Grant of the Ministry of Education, thus completing his formation in the United States and United Kingdom, in the John Hopkins University (1977), University of Michigan (1978) and University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, 1982-83).

Commitment with teaching and research

Dr. Esteban Morcillo began his commitment with teaching and research as intern student, in order to continue as grantholder, course responsible lecturer, assistance lecturer, tenure-track 2 lecturer and eventually, full university professor, first in the University of Alcala (1983) in order to definitely come back to his university origins in the University of Valencia (1990), where he occupied the chair of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

Commitment with the administration

Throughout last years, Dr. Esteban Morcillo has occupied diverse university administration positions, both in the University of Alcala, where he was Vice-Principal of Research and Doctorate(1986-1988), and in the University of Valencia, where he stood as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Valencia for two consecutive periods (1999-2006), he was Delegate of the Principal for the Teaching in Assistance Centers (2006-2007) and Vice-Principal of Research and Scientific Policy from 2007 to 2010, year of his election as Principal of the University of Valencia.

He also worked as representative of the Interministerial Commission of Science and Technology (CICYT) in Biomed2 (4th Programme Framework) and COST of the European Union (1997-2003)

Dr. Esteban Morcillo is elected President of the Spanish Society of Pharmacology.

Researching career

As researcher, Dr. Esteban Morcillo has five researching six-year term and five teaching five-year term accredited.

He has been Coordinator of the Sectorial Programme of Life and Health from the Valencian Plan of Science and Technology.

Ranking member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community, he has done more than a hundred and fifty publications in international magazines of his scientific speciality.

He is also member of editorial committees of scientific magazines (Elsevier and Acadèmic Press) and has been author of numerous chapters and text books in the fields of Pharmacology, Medicine and Dentistry.

His researching task was recognised in 2001 with the Galien of Research award in Pharmacology.
