Francesc Valldecabres appointed new director of University Choir of València

Francesc Valldecabres.

Francesc Valldecabres is the new director of the University Choir of València. He was born in Valencia, in 1980, and he continues the work of Constantino Martínez-Orts, who has been in charge of the choir during the last seven years. Through these years, the choir has received many awards as Medalla de Plata -the silver medal for mixed choir- at the Xiamen’s Choir Olympic Games in 2006 (China), the Habanera and public first prizes at the Torrevieja’s LIII Certamen Internacional de Habaneras in 2007, Distinción de la Orden de Jaume I (awarded by the Generalitat Valenciana), and, recently, Medalla al Mérito en las Bellas Artes by Real Academia de San Carlos de Valencia in 2011.

Thus, thanks to Constantino Martínez-Orts, the university choir achieved a very good vocal technique, which allowed the choir to interpret symphonic-choral works with Orquesta de València, like the Stabat Mater, Op. 58, by Czech composer Antonin Dvořák, or the piece Las Campanas, Op. 35, by the Russian S. Rachmaninov.

Valldecabres has declared that he is ‘very excited about the project and looking forward to working hard.’ ‘I think that the university choir of València is a choir with many possibilities and I would like to work in its versatility as for repertoires and projects.’

Frances Valldecabres was born in Valencia in 1980. He has been director of Coral Universitaria de Alicante, Orfeón de Aldaia, Grupo Ricercare, and deputy director of Cor Jove del Països Catalans. Moreover, he has directed more than 300 choral and symphonic-choral concerts. His repertoire covers varied works as Requiem de Victoria, Ensaladas de Fletxa, Missa Brevis, Chichester Psalms by Bernstein, Carmina Burana by Orff, Funeral Sentences, Welcome to all the pleasures, Come ye sons of art by Purcell, La Messe de Minuit by Charpentier, Mozart’s Requiem and Fauré’s Requiem, among others.

He is very interested in the Valencian musical patrimony, and he has transcribed and recover many 18th century’s works by Pradas, Morera, Vidal and P. Fuentes, a composer born in Aldaia (1721-1768). He has also premiered works by the Valencian composers P. de Luis and J. Sanz. Valldecabres was also art director in the vocal music cycle La Veu al Bon Temps (2000-2011) organized by the Aldaia’s town council. He belongs to Generalitat Valenciana’s Profesores de Música y Artes Escénicas institution in musical language and choir specialties, and currently he is working as a teacher in the Conservatorio Profesional de Valencia.
