The Universitat de València is the 11th higher education institution in the world in Remote Sensing and the 21st in Food Science and Technology, according to the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, published by ShangaiRanking Consultancy, the entity that elaborates the Shanghai Ranking. The ranking, which is made out of 4000 universities, locates the UV among the five best Spanish ones in 15 out of the 52 analysed subjects.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) is published by ShanghaiRanking’s Consultancy, an entity that in 2009 started to publish the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by subjects. Until now, it published two versions (ARWU by field and ARWU by subject) to classify the best 200 universities (TOP200). In 2017, it has classified the best 500 higher education centres in the world (TOP500) in 52 subjects divided into 5 fields: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.

According to the published data, the Universitat de València is the first one in Spain in Remote Sensing; the first one, together with the Universitat Politècnica de València in Energy Science and Engineering and the second one in Food Science and Technology. It is also located among the best five universities in Spain in Physics (2-4), Business Administration (2-5), Clinical Medicine (3-5), Biologic Sciences (4) and Scientific and Technological Instrumentation (4-5). The UV is also among the best five in Spain in Education, Management, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Psychology, Mathematics and Financial Sciences.

By fields, the Universitat de València stands out in Engineering, where it is placed among the best 150 higher education centres in the world in four subjects. In Natural Sciences, the Valencian centre is among the best 150 centres in Physics and among the first 200 at a global scale in Mathematics and Chemistry. When it comes to Social Sciences, it is located among the best 200 in two subjects (Business Management and Administration) and in three subjects in the section between the 200 and 300 first universities (Financial Sciences, Education and Psychology). In Clinical Medicine, Public Health and Pharmacy, the Valencian institution is rated among the 300 best universities in the world.

The universities included in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) have been selected by the amount of research publications in the 2011-2015 period and the bibliometric data has been collected from InCites. The signs analysed in the ranking for each institution are the number of publications in each subject, the number of citations, the international collaboration, the number of works published in high-impact magazines and the number of people that are academically recognised in a subject.
