LIFE ON CAMPUS: Arts & Culture

The old historic General Study building at University Street in València was refurbished in 1999 on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of University of Valencia. The origin of the building is found in the houses bought by the city juries in 1493 to use them as the seat of the General Study, founded in 1499. It evolved over time, all along five centuries of history. All the works undertaken always took into account its use rather than its monumentality. At present, it is the seat of the Historic Library, although with totally renewed infrastructures for studying and researching. It has also become a cultural venue, but its academic life is well rooted with the maintenance of the conference hall and other quarters. A space for culture in University of Valencia, La Nau offers exhibition facilities on a permanent basis. They are adapted to the features of the projects presented. The Matilde Salvador hall is a multi-purpose room for music events and shows. The Sapiència Chapel sometimes hosts concerts and exhibitions.

Drama Club: shows are staged at Hall Matilde Salvador (La Nau building). In addition, the Club coordinates the training activities of the theatre group of University, ASSAIG. It also delivers two permanent workshops (dance and theatre) for two different training levels as well as induction drama courses with a view to promoting this activity in university.
Cinema Club: it offers cycles of commented thematic projections, lectures, courses, and seminars.
Music club: this club organises and coordinates classical music concerts in university. It also coordinates concert cycles usually held at the Sapiència Chapel of the Nau building, at the Montaner concert room of the Lluís Vives Student Hall and at the Joan Reglà concert hall of the Botanic Garden.
Poetry Club: it promotes poetry writing and reading in university. It organises presentations, poem readings, and discussions with young poets and well-known poets.
Debating Club: lectures and round tables about current issues and matters of social and academic interest are organised are organised. Well-known personalities of the national and international social, political, economic and academic scene participate in the different thematic cycles organised.

Escena Erasmus: Escena Erasmus is a pioneering European theatre and cultural project set at the Universitat de València and addressed mainly to Erasmus students. Escena Erasmus has the objective of creating a university net which promotes the exchange among the plays performed mainly by Erasmus srudents at the partner universities. The European Theatre Project Escena Erasmus offers: theatre workshops with a final show for Erasmus students and local students; the eventual creation of a theatre company with the students who participate in the workshops which produces a yearly show which will tour the partner universities; the creation of a long-lasting theatrical exchange net among European universities.

Of an amateur nature and mostly made up of students, both the orchestra and the choir focus on music interpretation from the educational viewpoint.
Set up in 1947, the Choir of University of Valencia is the oldest in Spain. Its conductor is Constantino Martínez Orts. It has 100 mixed voices and rehearsals are held twice a week from September to June. Auditions are held the first fortnight in October and no previous music knowledge is requested.
The symphonic Orchestra has 70 musicians under the age of 27 and is conducted by Cristóbal Soler. A rehearsal is held on a weekly basis from September to June. Auditions are held in October, and an intermediate music level is needed. The members of this group receive financial help for their music education, optional credits, pedagogy and music training, and they are also promoted as solo musicians in chamber concerts. The creation of chamber groups is also encouraged. Its activities are recognised with optional credits.
The Music Activity Trust (General Foundation of University of Valencia) manages activities with both the orchestra and the choir. For further information on activities and admission, please contact the Trust.

Dependent on the General Foundation of University, this special Trust was created with the aim of promoting creative activities in plastic arts or any other art expressions among the university community.
The donation by Jesús A. Martínez Guerricabeitia and his wife in July 1999 increased the contemporary art collection of University of Valencia in a significant way. The collection includes more than 100 paintings and 300 graphic pieces with a marked social content. Some works are noteworthy: Anzo, Arroyo, Canogar, Equipo Crónica, Genovés, Villalba i Vostell, among others. For exhibition purposes –one of the most relevant 20th century collections owned by a Spanish university- the Trust has a dedicated exhibition room, the Martínez Guerricabeitia Hall, on University Street. The Foundation manages and disseminates the collection with a view to raising an interest in contemporary art amongst university members and for the institution to open its doors to critical creativeness.
The Trust also grants awards and organises different activities. In order to accomplish this target, economic funds are allowed for, with an annual contribution by Mr. Jesús A. Martínez Guerricabeitia and additional contributions made after the signing of the institution's protocol. The Trust organises the Martínez Guerricabeitia Biennale, an exhibition of a small number of art pieces selected by art critics and galleries. The Trust selects the most interesting works, which are then purchased by University, thus becoming part of its heritage.
Each year the Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust broadens the range of activities. In this respect, the emphasis is not only placed on the preservation, exhibition, and research on their own collections but also on the in-depth analysis of today’s art. The Trust also organises optional credit courses on art, politics and thought, and documentation and research applied to humanities. The courses are targeted at students of history of art or other related disciplines.
