Daeron, el bardo del rey Thingol de Doriath en Beleriand, inventó sus runas
para escribir la lengua de los elfos grises. Sin embargo, los \emph{sindar}
no apreciaron esta invención, y fueron los enanos \emph{naugrim} que
trataban con Thingol quienes compartieron las runas con muchos otros pueblos
de la Tierra Media.

Una vez que los \emph{noldor} exiliados llegaron a Beleriand, las
\emph{certar} de Daeron se reorganizaron siguiendo las ideas fonéticas de
las \emph{tengwar} de Fëanor, siendo este proceso especialmente importante
entre los \emph{noldor} de Eregion. Los enanos de Moria que tenían contactos
con Eregion tomaron prestado este sistema de escritura, y lo modificaron
para que también pudiera representar los sonidos propios del
\emph{khuzdul}: la lengua secreta de los enanos.

Posteriormente, los enanos de Erebor volvieron a modificar este sistema,
cambiando los sonidos de algunas runas e inventando \emph{certar} nuevas:
