*    Class is in studio format, with occasional readings, lectures, and discussions. You will spend most of your time interacting online, learning techniques of representation, and acquiring digital skills. There are no written exams. Your evidence of accomplishment will be your website: its design quality, representational sophistication, technical level, and usefulness to others in the project.

El formato de la clase es de estudio, con lecturas ocasionales, ponencias y debates. Pasarás la mayor parte de tu tiempo interactuando online, aprendiendo técnicas de la representación, y adquiriendo habilidades digitales. No habrá exámenes por escrito. Tu evidencia de éxito será tu propia página web: la calidad de su diseño, la sofisticación representacional, el nivel técnico, y la utilidad para los demás participantes del proyecto decidirán la nota.

What is internet? How can it be used as a tool for research? How do you describe a culture in the age of high technology? What happens when cultures collide? Using virtual world technology MMM and ACTLab students meet MIT students and researchers, also at the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, and at Cambridge University.

¿Qué es internet? ¿Cómo puede usarse de herramienta de investigación? ¿Cómo describirías una cultura en la edad de las nuevas tecnologías? ¿Qué sucede cuando colisionan las culturas? Usando tecnologías virtuales los estudiantes de MMM se encuentran con alumnos del ACTLab, con estudiantes del MIT y estudiantes de la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia. Recien se nos han unido Cambridge University y la Universidad de Granada y le seguirán muchas más..

*    Learn and/or use digital skills such as audio recording and mixing, digital video, digital editing, webpage construction, and interactive design;

*    By studying anthropological principles of cultural representation and its pleasures and pitfalls, create representations of Texan/ Austin/ UT/ your life to exchange with UV, MIT and UPV students.
Al estudiar principios antropológicos de la representación cultural y sus placeres y defectos, y crear representaciones de la ComunidadValenciana/Valencia/UV/ tu vida para compartir con los estudiantes del UT (ACTlab), MIT, UPV y muchas otras.
 
*    Learn conventional Spanish in a relaxed, supportive (and fun) atmosphere;

Evaluació/Assessment:

Reading
The materials, several books, including short, accessible discussions of theory, books and articles that provide model interpretations of some of these texts, as well as a few articles on the very act of reading and how we understand culture are already on-line.

Writing
You will have two formal writing assignments and several informal writing tasks. One group project that will require each person in the group to document its personal contribution; this project is due on the day of the final exam. The final project will be defined during the academic course. This class will be very writing intensive.

Speaking
Each class session we will discuss some aspect of literature, of reading strategies, and have some form of practice writing. On days that are designated as "online work" we will each work on improving, comenting and exchanging with several members of our online project. An online community only works if you ask questions of your peers and offer useful, concrete advice on how they may improve their contributions. We will have several opportunities early on to practice online group work if you are not familiar with this kind of classroom situation. Your work group will give two presentations during the semester. These oral/digital presentations should discuss the critical strategy your group has developed, you won't be giving a lecture, you will be contributing to the development of a collective website where your individual contributions can be integrated.

Evaluation
Each assignment sheet describes how that contribution will be assessed. In brief, however, webpages and sites will be given a number score from 1 - 10; we will discuss what constitutes each number at the beginning of each assignment. At the end of the course, we will decide on a traditional grade scale to correlate with the numbers.

Los textos son muestras fragmentarias de Foucault, Ronell, Barthes, Lacan, Adorno, Althusser, Baudrillard, Benjamin y Derrida. Películas, vídeos y espacios sonoros serán añadidos a lo largo del semestre. Cosas que haremos incluyen, bueno, cualquier cosa que puedas imaginar.
 
Texts include excerpts from Foucault, Ronell, Barthes, Lacan, Adorno, Althusser, Baudrillard, Benjamin, and Derrida. Films, videos and soundscapes will be added over the semester. Things we will make include, well, anything you can imagine.
