The Second Annual
Summer Publishing Institute for Professionals
June 11-16, 2000

The University of Virginia Second Annual Summer Publishing Institute forProfessionals is an intensive six-day seminar for publishing professionals that need to upgrade their knowledge of digital and Internet publication and the new technologies to meet the current challenges transforming the publishing industry. Participants will learn how multipurposing of content may enhance publishing options; how digital publishing may be applied to marketing, sales, and promotion; and what particular technologies are currently being applied for electronic publications, and those likely to be applied in the future. Registration is limited, allowing attendees the benefit of an intimate, interactive institute offering customized attention from faculty and participants alike. Acquire the skills necessary to make informed decisions about what tools, techniques, and new business models are needed to develop successful electronic and print publications in this new millennium.

Who Should Attend
All book and journal publishers, including, trade, educational, textbook, association/non-profit, business-to-business, government/service, and those in related fields who are expanding into digital publication, and need to develop the know-how to create successful electronic publishing programs.

Location
The Institute will be held June 11-16, 2000 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Charlottesville is 120 miles southwest of Washington, DC, and 70 miles west of Richmond. It has extensive air service provided by USAirways Express, United Express, and Delta’s COMAIR. Ground transportation is provided by Greyhound and AMTRAK.

Fee and Registration 
The Summer Publishing Institute for Professionals registration fee is $1995 per person. This includes admission to all sessions, course materials, the opening reception and dinner in the University of Virginia’s Rotunda, and daily coffee and pastries, all refreshment breaks, daily lunch, a private visit to Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello, followed by dinner at the Historic Michie Tavern, and a closing reception.

Enrollment in the Summer Publishing Institute is limited, and early registration is advised. You can register online or by mail/fax. Registration for this seminar must be made in advance by completing the registration form and mailing it with your remittance payable to the University of Virginia. Mail to Publishing & Communications Institute, University of Virginia Continuing Education, 104 Midmont Lane, Charlottesville, VA 22903. If paying by credit card, you may register by calling 800/346-3882, or FAX your registration to 804/982-5297. If paying by purchase order, it must be attached to the registration form, and carry a P.O. number.

Other Information

Refunds and Cancellations
Should you need to cancel your registration notification must be received in writing on or before May 1, 2000. Another person may be substituted without penalty. Otherwise, only 80% of the full registration fee will be refunded. A cancellation received after May 1, 2000 is subject to forfeiture of the full registration fee.

Lodging and Meals
Hotel accommodations, and the cost of meals (other than those described above), are the sole responsibility of the attendee. However, we have made special arrangements for attendees with two new hotels: The Hampton Inn & Suites West, and The Red Roof Inn. Both hotels are conveniently located on West Main Street, within walking distance of classes, and adjacent to the “Corner,” a business area of shops and restaurants, which joins the University Grounds. The discounted room rate at the at Hampton Inn is $80 per night, plus tax, for a single, and $87 per night, plus tax, for a double. The room rate for either single or double includes a deluxe continental breakfast. To make reservations call 1-800Hampton or 804/923-8600, and ask for the "Summer Publishing Institute" room block at the Hampton Inn & Suites West.

The discounted room rate at The Red Roof Inn is $62 per night, plus tax, and does not include breakfast. In either case, we will be providing daily coffee, pastries and refreshments at the classroom site. Please note the cutoff date for reservations at both hotels is May 17, 2000.
