: Advances in multimedia technology are beginning to affect the
: manner in which literature is taught in the classroom, and the
: publication of Arthur Miller's outstanding play in a CD-ROM version
: is an excellent example.
: Aimed at high-school-age audiences, the CD-ROM contains the
: following features:
: - Entire text of the play,
: - Critical essays on context and background,
: - Historical photographs of the Salem witch trials
: - A Voyager Expanded Book which allows thematic and textual
: searches,
: - 48 video excerpts of Arthur Miller answering questions
: about the play,
: - Interviews with the members of the cast of London's Young
: Vic theatre on their performances of "The Crucible,"
: - Interviews with actors, set designers, and directors who
: have worked on the play, including Dustin Hoffman ("Miller
: is my artistic father"), Vanessa Redgrave, and John
: Malkovich.
: The CD-ROM package, produced with assistance from the Arthur
: Miller Center for American Studies at the University of East Anglia
: and the Norwich Technology Unit, will be supported, beginning in
: March, by an Internet site for posting comments and special
: classroom applications. The exact location of Penguin's home page
: has yet to be determined, but more information is available by
: sending e-mail to crucible@penguin.com.
: It's too early to assess the ultimate impact of combining
: literary works and multimedia technology, but I don't believe that
: the mating is a gimmick that will dwindle after its initial
: enthusiasm. If subsequent works are of the same caliber as "The
: Crucible on CD-ROM," there is genuine cause for excitement.
