Since 1994 I've been teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the Computer Writing and Research Lab, which is part of the Division of Rhetoric and Composition at the University of Texas at Austin. I'm also one of the founding faculty for the new center for Technology, Literacy, and Culture. I'm interested in research in complex systems, distributed cognition, information architecture, knowledge ecologies, teaching and learning environments, writing, and design. My book, The Wealth of Reality: An Ecology of Composition, was published by Southern Illinois University Press in 1999. More information about my teaching philosophy can be found here.

I've also been involved in several ongoing projects. The Online Learning Record is a large-scale project that documents students' development and achievement using diverse forms of evidence of student learning. The Online Learning Record was adapted for college-level courses with permission from the Learning Record, developed for K-12 by the Center for Language in Learning. It has been funded by the Carnegie Foundation, DARPA, and UT . We are currently working on a web-to-database application of the Learning Record. This new application will support the use of the Learning Record on the web and also develop a national archive that can be used for research on learning in college level courses.

Worlds Fair is a large collaborative project which engages visitors in a web-based science fiction story that incorporates multimedia exhibits for an intergalactic "worlds fair" that features exhibits from many galaxies. Contributions may include non-fiction exhibits about some aspect of life on earth, or science fiction exhibits from remote galaxies. Recently, Worlds Fair received an Innovations in Instructional Technology Award from UT.

I'm also very pleased to be one of the editors for the online component of the Computers and Composition Journal, the leading international journal for teachers of writing in computer-enhanced environments.
