  • Introduction

WordCruncher is a powerful and sophisticated PC program, designed for creating and analyzing electronic textbases. It includes two separate and distinct programs, WCView and WCIndex. WCIndex indexes texts to be studied with WCView; WCView analyzes and retrieves texts prepared with WCIndex.

With WCIndex, users may catalogue and alphabetically sort each word in a text, written in English or foreign languages, into a WordCruncher Index, which serves as an electronic roadmap of the text and makes sophisticated searches possible.

With WCView, users can analyze and manipulate data from a textbase in any number of ways, including launching word, phrase, substring, proximity, Boolean, and combination searches; examining selected references in contexts; conducting user-defined freque ncy distribution analysis; creating user-selected word lists and reference lists; and generating concordances according to a set of user-defined parameters.

The electronic texts acquired by LETRS that have been prepared, and can be analyzed, with the WordCruncher program include: the Riverside Shakespeare, the King James and New International Bibles, the Goethe Works, Kant's Gesammelte Schriften, ICAME Collection of English Language Corpora, and American historical, literary, legal, and political texts.
