Miguel V. Andrés was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1957. He received the Licenciado en Física degree in 1979 and the Doctor en Física (Ph.D.) degree in 1985, both from the Universidad de Valencia, Spain. From 1983 he has served successively as Assistant Professor and Lecturer in the Departamento de Física Aplicada of the Universidad de Valencia. From 1984 to 1987 he was visiting for several periods the Department of Physics, University of Surrey, U.K., as a Research Fellow. Until 1984 he was engaged in research on microwave surface waveguides. His current research interests include waveguide theory (inhomogeneous waveguides and microstructured optical fibres) and optical fibre devices and systems for signal processing and sensor applications (optical fibre interferometers, evanescent field devices based on optical fibre tapers and in-fibre Bragg gratings). Dr. M.V. Andrés is a member of IEEE, OSA and IOP.
Pedro Fernández de Córdoba Castellá was born in Valencia in October
1965. He received the Licenciado degree, and the M.S. and the
Ph.D. degrees in Theoretical Physics from the Universitat
de València (UV), Valencia, Spain in 1988, 1990, and 1992,
respectively. He also received the Ph.D degree in Mathematics
from the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV), Valencia,
Spain, in 1997. His research work was performed at UV, UPV,
the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Russia), the
University of Tübingen (Germany) and the Instituto Nazionale
di Fisica Nucleare in Torino (Italia). He is currently
Professor in the Departamento of Matemática Aplicada at UPV.
His research interests include the area of electromagnetic propagation
in optical waveguides and fiber devices, as well as the area of
nonlinear and quantum effects in optical fibers
Albert Ferrando was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1963. He received the
Physics degree (Licenciado en Física), and the MSc and PhD degrees
in Theoretical Physics
from the Universitat de València (UV), Valencia, Spain, in 1985, 1986 and 1991,
respectively. His research work has been performed at UV, the
Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1990-91), Madrid, Spain, as an Assistant
Professor, and the Universisty of Bern (1991-93), Bern, Switzerland, as
a Post-Doctoral Fellow. He also visited the Niels Borh Institute (1988),
Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(1995,'96,'98,'99 and '01), Cambridge, USA, as a Visiting Scientist.
In 1996, he joined the Department of Optics at UV as an Assistant
Professor. He became Associate Professor in 2001. His research
interests are in the area of electromagnetic propagation in
optical waveguides and fiber devices, as well as in nonlinear
and quantum effects in optical fibers.
Enrique Silvestre was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1962.
He received the Licenciado degree and the MSc in Theoretical Physics in
1986 and 1989, respectively, at the Universitat de València (UV) in Spain,
and spent some years managing computers in several research institutions.
He became Assistant Professor in the Department of Optics at
UV in 1997, where he developed a novel vector modal method for describing the
propagation of light in guiding systems, and received his PhD in 1999.
His research work was also performed at the University of Bath, from 1999
to 2000, as a Research Officer.
He became Associate Professor at the UV in 2001.
His research interests are in the area of modal techniques for
electromagnetic wave propagation in nonsymmetrical structures and photonic
crystals.
Juan A. Monsoriu was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1975. He received the
degree in physics (Licenciado en Física) in 1998 and the MSc in 2000
both from the Universitat de València
(UV). He is currently working towards
the PhD degree in the Department of Optics at UV. His research
interest are in the area of modal techniques for electromagnetic wave
propagation in microstructured optical waveguides and other
three-dimensional dielectric systems.
Mario Zacarés was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1975. He received the
physics degree (Licenciado en Física) in 1999 from the
Universitat de València (UV),
Spain. Currently, he enjoys a grant of the Fundación Ramón Areces and he
is working towards the PhD degree in the Department of Optics at UV.
His research interests are in the areas of electromagnetic propagation
