En 1972 se celebraron los primeros Encuentros Shakespeare en la Universidad de Valencia. Desde entonces, en años sucesivos, Valencia ha sido un lugar de reunión para especialistas de todo el mundo. No pensábamos entonces que la actividad comenzada por nosotros aquí, se pudiera transformar, años después, en un proyecto de investigación permanente. Tampoco imaginamos que lo que se empezó con algo más que timidez, se convertiría en la base del presente Instituto Shakespeare, donde más de una docena de jóvenes investigadores y profesores trabajan en la edición y traducción de textos shakespearianos, al igual que en el estudio de problemas relacionados con la teoría y práctica del teatro. Nuestro Instituto de investigación ha despertado desde entonces una curiosidad científica, que ha estimulado a profesores e investigadores de otros Departamentos universitarios a unirse a nuestro equipo. Aquellos Encuentros, planificados casi informalmente en colaboración con el Profesor Pérez Gállego de la Universidad de Zaragoza, hicieron posible la concurrencia de especialistas que hoy nos distinguen con su amistad: Stanley Wells, Barbara y Giorgio Melchiori, Thomas Matheson, Jan Kott, Norbert Greiner, Pierre Constant, Walter Hodges, Esteban Pujals, Charles Marowitz, Luisa Capecchi... Terence Spencer fue quien con más frecuencia nos visitó. Le gustaba a Terence Spencer venir a Valencia, hablar con nosotros, y pasear con los alumnos de nuestro Departamento. También a nosotros nos gustaba que Terence Spencer viniera a hablar sobre Shakespeare, las obras de Shakespeare, el arte de Shakespeare. Todos admirábamos su brillante magisterio, su inteligente humor y su entusiasmo contagioso. Este libro, nuestro tributo al Profesor Spencer, se propone expresar nuestra gratitud hacia él. No sólo le estamos agradecidos por venir a Valencia, sino que ante todo, le agradecemos el aliento y apoyo para la creación del Instituto Shakespeare en esta Universidad. Hay evidencia tangible de su presencia entre nosotros: sus fotografías, sus cartas, notas relacionadas con proyectos para el futuro; pero especialmente, sus clases grabadas que todos hemos escuchado tantas veces. Queremos agradecer al Instituto Shakespeare en Birmingham la ayuda prestada en la transcripción de las cintas. In 1972 the first Encuentros Shakespeare were held at  The University of Valencia. From then on, in successive years, Valencia has been a meeting-place for specialists from all over the world. We did not think then that the activity begun by us here might be transformed, in later years, into research projects worked at on a permanent basis. Neither did we imagine that what was started with sorne trepidation should become the basis of the present Instituto Shakespeare of the University of Valencia, where more than a dozen young researchers and lecturers work at both editing and translating Shakespearean texts as well as studying problems relating to the theory and practice of theatre. Our research Institute has since aroused scientific curiosity that has stimulated lecturers and researchers from other University Departmens to join our team. Those Encuentros, planned almost informally in collaboration with Professor Pérez Gállego of the University of Zaragoza, brought together specialists whom today we are honoured to consider as our distinguished friends: Stanley Wells, Thomas Matheson, Norbert Greiner, Pierre Constant, Luisa Capecchi, Esteban Pujals, Giorgio and Barbara Melchiori, Jan Kott, Walter Hodges, C. Marowitz... Terence Spencer was our most frequent guest speaker. He liked Valencia, he liked talking with us, and walking with our students. We, in our turn, enjoyed his lectures on Shakespeare, on Shakespeare’s works, on Shakespeare’s art. We all admired Professor Spencer’s brilliant lecturing, intelligent humour and his contagious enthusiasm. This books, our tribute to Professor Spencer, is to express our gratitude to him. Not only are we grateful for his coming to Valencia, but most of all, we are grateful for his encouragement and support towards the creation of the Instituto Shakespeare. There is tangible evidence of his presence around us: his photographs, his letters, notes related to tentative projects; but especially, his taped lectures which we have all listened to so many times. Our thanks are due here to the Shakespeare Institute at Birmingham for their help in editing the tapes.
