Shakespeare AssociationThe Congress will be held from 18 to 23 April 2001 in Valencia, Spain. All sessions will take place at the Palau de la Música, located in the cutural heart of the city.

OUTLINE PROGRAMMEInternationally known speakers will give plenary papers, and there will be a general meeting of the International Shakespeare Association.
- Plenary meetings:
Over sixty speakers from many different countries will address the Congress. Although the majority will be by invitation, some space has been reserved for papers submitted for consideration. [see Call for Papers information]
- Short papers :
Over thirty seminars and several workshops covering a wide range of topics will be held. The deadline for registrarion in a seminar or workshop is 30 April 2000. Registration for a seminar or workshop is not compulsory.
- Seminars and Workshops :
An extensive programme will be arranged encompassing receptions, performances, sightseeing, and visits to museums and other attractions.

Space has been reserved on the programme for a number of previously unpublished papers which will be considered by members of the Congress Committee. Those submitting a paper should be members of the International Shakespeare Association, Shakespeare Foundation of Spain or other national Shakespeare societies which are corporate members of the I.S.A. CALL FOR PAPERSPapers must be in English and should be designed for a presentation not exceeding thirty-five minutes. Papers clearly exceeding these limits cannot be considered.
Since it is planned to publish the selected proceedings of the València Congress, the I.S.A. reserves the right to a first option on the printing of any of the papers accepted for the programme.
Those submitting papers should send two non-returnable copies in typescript, together with the appropriate form included in the Congress leaflet or can submit papers electronically via the Congress web site http://www.uv.es/~fse. Papers will be acknowledged and senders will be informed in due course whether or not they have been successful.
Papers should relate to some aspect of the overall theme of the Congress, "Shakespeare in the Mediterranean". Amongst the factors affecting the Committee's choice of papers will be thematic relevance and the need to attain a balanced programme.

Seminars and workshops on a wide range of subjects related to the overall congress theme will form an important part of the programme. The seminars are expected not to exceed 25 scholars who will work, under the direction of the leaders, on the topics outlined here. Papers will be written, circulated and read in advanced, so that the seminars can be devoted to a discussion of the issues raised in the research.Registration in a seminar will require active participation. CONGRESS SEMINARS AND WORKSHOPSA formal letter of invitation will go to all seminar members to assist in obtaining institutional funding. Any seminar or workshop member who has not completed the assigned work by the deadlines specified by the leaders will not be listed in the Congress programme and may not join in the discussion at the meeting. A seminar registration form is included on-line. Registration is open to all members of the International Shakespeare Association, Fundación Shakespeare de España, or other national Shakespeare societies which are corporate members of the I.S.A.
Please do not submit seminar papers in advance to the leaders or to the Fundación Shakespeare de España. Once enrolments are set the leaders will solicit papers from the registered participants. Registrations for seminars will be collated centrally and details of the participants sent to leaders by 30 May 2000.

The main hotel accommodation will be at the Hotel Melia Valencia Palace near to the Palau de la Música, the site of all the Congress sessions. The cost is 17.000 pesetas (euro 106,25) per night for a single or 21.400 pesetas (euro 134,375) for a double room.
ACCOMMODATION AND COSTSIn addition to those at the Hotel Meliá Valencia Palace, less expensive accommodation will be available at the Hotel Meliá Rey Don Jaime, Dimar,Acteón Plaza, NH Villacarlos, NH Ciudad de Valencia.
A cost of 10.000.- pesetas (euro 43,75) per day is a reasonable estimate of the amount required for daily subsistence.
The Congress registration fee will be 30.000 pesetas (euro 187,5) to include the opening reception, basic refreshments during the morning intervals of the Congress sessions, and the Congress luncheon on Monday.
Further details of the accommodation, including a booking form, will be included in the Draft Congress programme which is hoped will be issued in January 2001.

CONGRESSS SOCIALThe congress will offer an exciting opportunity to experience some of the cultural and social life of Valencia, and to see the sights of the city and its environs, including the celebration of the Feast of St. Vincent, the patron saint of Valencia, on the last day of the Congress. AND CULTURAL PROGRAMMEMuseums to be visited will include the IVAM, Pio V, Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, L'Hemisferic, etc. There will be an opportunity to take part in excursions to nearby places of historical interest, for example the Castillo de Sagunto, the monastery of El Puig, the castle of Santa Barbara in Alicante, etc. The theatres of the city Els teatres de la Generalitat Valenciana will offer a series of events connected to the theme of the Congress.
The congress will feature an opening reception and a luncheon for all delegates.
