Abstract:

By combining close analysis of Shakespeare's own sonnet-writing, both within plays and in the 1609 Shakespeare's
Sonnets, with wide-ranging explorations of Petrarchan, post-Petrarchan and anti-Petrarchan traditions in Renaissance
Europe, we will seek to illuminate the rich cultural and historical penumbra of Shakespeare's use of the form. Rather
than searching for specific sources or analogues, we shall aim at the widest possible contextualization, including
discussion of translations of Shakespeare's Sonnets, and other sonnets, into other languages.
