The Department of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese of the University of Virginia

& The Department of Romance Languages of Washington and Lee University

Suggested topics for the conference include:
  • comparative perspectives (such as: transoceanic connections; convent culture/the secular world; intraEuropean influence)
  • anxieties of influence: women and their literary foremothers/forefathers
  • erotic codes
  • women writers: questioning the silences of the Middle Ages
  • illness and gender
  • woman as biographical subject
  • women's scientific and political discourse
  • women writers and the other arts

  • FOUR copies of a one-page abstract for 20-minute papers, and proposals for special sessions (with particular encouragement for those with transoceanic content) and panels (recovery, editing, publication, teaching of women writers' texts) should be submitted by U.S.mail or Fax by April 1, 1997 to:
