Theoretical Chemistry has a nearly 50 years tradition in the Physical Chemistry Department of the University of Valencia. It can be said that the initial researchers nucleus, formed in the 50's by the Prof. José Ignacio Fernández-Alonso, Doctor in honoris causa of this University, was the Spain pioneer group in this research field. A great part of the Spain researchers in Quantum Chemistry come from this initial nucleus.
After the deplacement of the Prof. Fernández-Alonso and the majority of his team to the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1972, Prof. Francisco Tomás Vert, from 1976, boosted the research group activity. Many of the best chemistry students of the Valencia University of this period devoted their professional activity towards the research in Quantum Chemistry. Many among them reached a permanent position in the University. The Group policy, kept along these years, of international exchanges, and long postdoc stages in many of the best European Laboratories, has reinforced the background of the Group components. Nowadays, the Research group is fully consolidated, has a great prestige among the researchers in this field, and keep international collaborations with several research teams, abroad the world.
