Introduction

English is the official language of Nigeria. This might seem surprising but not if we take into account that many languages are spoken in this country (example 1). If one is made official, this would give it precedence over others so English is a neutral language in this case. The native language of the speaker in our recording is Edo (example 3). She refers to it as a dialect! She learnt Standard English at school like people in many countries. However, the difference is that English is a lingua franca as you can see in example 3. With regard to grammar, realizations such as she don’t is typical of speakers of English as a second language.
