Minimal Pairs

Minimal pairs

/s/ Voiceless alveolar fricative vs. /z/ Voiced alveolar fricative

Example "use" (noun) /ju:s/ vs. "use" (verb) /ju:z/

For Spanish speakers it is problematic because the /s/ phoneme exists in Spanish but /z/ doesn't. However, [z] can be heard in words like "mismo".
