Sweden at the UN. (.)
Estocolmo: Instituto Sueco. 1998. 63 p.
ISBN: 91-520-0456-2.
Resumen: As a neutral country during World War II and a nonaligned
one during the Cold War, Sweden has seen at close hand the forces
that are unleashed when serious conflicts develop. It has therefore
been natural for its citizens to become involved in UN efforts
to promote peace around the world. Over the decades, Swedish citizens
have played a major role in establishing new mechanisms of international
work. Profiled in this book are Folke Bernadotte, pioneer in UN
mediation during the Palestine conflict; Dag Hammarskjöld,
path-breaking UN Secretary-General; Jonas Waern, a peacekeeper
reluctantly drawn into battle in Katanga; Alva Myrdal, energetic
Swedish ambassador to the Geneva disarment negotiations; and Olof
Palme, international opinion molder and mediator in the Iran-Iraq
war. Also portrayed here are three Swedish citizens with sensitive
international peace-related assignments during the 1990s: Rolf
Ekéus, who monitors the elimination of weapons of mass
destruction in Iraq; Jan Eliasson, who has developed new UN instruments
to deal with humanitarian crises in Somalia, Mozambique and elsewhere;
and Carl Bildt, mediator and head of postwar reconstruction efforts
in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The authors of the portraits are journalist
Gunnar Fredriksson and Lars G. Lindskog, Brigadier General Bo
Pellnäs, Associate Professor Sune Persson and Professor Peter
Wallensteen (who is also editor of this book).

Swedish Local Government: Traditions and Reforms. (.)
Estocolmo: Instituto Sueco. 1999. 123 p.
ISBN: 91-520-0549-6.
Resumen: Local self-government has a strong position in Sweden.
This provides good prerequisites for residents themselves to assume
responsibility for local affairs. The municipalities and country
councils have expanded their outside contacts as a consequence
of Swedish membership since 1995 in the European Union and other
international cooperation in a variaty of fields. The major challenge
for Swedish municipalities and county councils will be to find
ways to continue functioning as democratic institutions in an
increasingly internationalized setting. The authors of this book
provide a brief history of Swedish local self-government since
the Middle Ages. They explain the structure and tasks of the public
sector, the Local Government Act, organizational principles, finances
and local democracy in practice.

Literature in Sweden. (.)
Estocolmo: Instituto Sueco. 1997. 135 p.
ISBN: 91-520-0473-2.
Resumen: What's going on in contemporary Swedish literature? Are
there any clearly marked trends or tendencies? What themes interest
Swedish authors? This book presents a selection of contemporary
authors with the emphasis on the 1980s and 1990s. In separate
sections, three writers give their view of contemporary poetry,
prose and drama. Magnus Florin´s essay on poetry spans the
century from Johannes Edfeldt to Lotta Olsson. Marianne Steinsaphir´s
presentation of Swedish prose - from the soil to asphalt and back
again - discusses such phenomena as modern images of women, playing
with genres, and rural life as both province and narrative universe.
Margareta Sörenson describes drama from the point of view
of the audience. She scrutinizes the dramatist as they scrutinize
the Swedes and Swedish ways of living, and focuses on such authors
as Lars Noren and Kristina Lugn. In this book you will find both
established and first-time authors. It provides an introduction
to literature written in Swedish. This survey is your guide to
contemporary Swedish literature.

History of Swedish Literature, A. (.)
Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press. 1961. 708 p.
Resumen: With its origins barely discernible on certain ancient
rock carvings and rune stones, Swedish literature has had a long
and not infrequently fascinating history. Professor Gustafson´s
book tells the whole story of this literature in the most complete
account in any language outside Swedish. Authorative critical
appraisals are provided of the work of such internationally known
Swedish authors as Strindberg, Selma Lagerlöf, and Pär
Lagerkvist as well as a host of others of greater or lesser importance,
including, among those now active on the literary scence, Vilhelm
Moberg, whose monumental immigrant epos has recently attracted
many American readers. Of particular value to scholars and librarians
is the extensive critical bibliographical guide which provides
a running commentary on Swedish criticism and scholarship on the
nation´s literature. A selected list of Swedish literature
available in English translation is also provided.

Cultural Heritage in Sweden, The - Preserving the Past for
Posterity. (.)
Estocolmo: Instituto Sueco. 1998. 160 p.
ISBN: 91-520-0528-3.
Resumen: All nations cherish and defend their colective memory,
their cultural heritage. Owing to fortunate circumstances, not
least almost two centuries of peace, Sweden has been able to preserve
its cultural heritage in an almost unique manner. Archives, libraries,
ancient monuments and museums are intruments by means of which
a country establishes and maintains its identity. In this book
the most important institutions engaged in preserving the Swedish
cultural heritage describe in their own words their history, their
current activities and their tasks for the future. Perspectives
and approaches vary, but the various chapters taken together give
a clear and comprehensive idea of the way in which Sweden has
managed its cultural heritage in the past and is managing it today.

Resumen: Aquests Lleures i sentències donen a conèixer

Roots of Swedish neutrality, The. (.)
Estocolmo: Instituto Sueco. 1986. 80 p.
ISBN: 91-520-0187-3.
Resumen: Sweden's policy of neutrality was reaffirmed in the late
1940s, when Europe became divided into two hostile blocs. The
primary instrument of Sweden's security policy - non participation
in alliances in peacetime aiming at neutrality in the event of
war - was defined over the following years.
However, Swedish neutrality has a tradition which goes much further
back in history. Many of the principles essential to our country's
present-day neutrality policy were in fact formulated as early
as in the 1830s. During both the First and the second World Wars
Sweden managed to stay out of the conflict. The lessons learnt
during the Second World War were particularly fresh when Sweden
decided in the late 1940s to continue with a policy of neutrality,
but events of earlier periods also played a role in Swedish thinking..
