Types of Words in Spanish: Nouns and Adjectives

by Liliana Falquet

This unit consists of one single lesson, related to the identification, distinction and understanding of nouns and adjectives. This would be the first unit, followed by the several units which would be devoted to the other types of words.

In Spanish, words are divided into variable and invariable. One of the facts which determines what words belong to one group or the other is that related to the different endings which are used in order to express number (singular or plural), gender (masculine or femenine), grade, tense, mood or voice, among others.

These words are classified as 'variable words', and nouns, adjectives, pronouns and verbs fall into this category. Therefore, similarly, words, which cannot change their form are called 'invariable words', such as adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions.

Once these two concepts have been understood, this lesson will focus on the identificatin and explanation of nouns and adjectives.

Nouns are variable words, because they have gender and number, they are used to name a person, place, or thing, and they function as the subject of a sentence or as the object of a verb or a prepositional phrase; similarly, they are aiso the heads of noun phrases.

Adjectives are also variable words. Not only do they have gender and number, but they also have grade: positive, comparative, and superlative; they can express qualities and characteristics, and modify nouns.
