GORKA LEJARCEGI

Mendata (Bizkaia), 1967

Gorka Lejarcegi has an advertising degree by the University of the Basque Country (EHU-UPV) and a law degree by UNED (Spanish Open University). He has participated in photography workshops by Juantxu Rodríguez (UIMP, Santander), Ferdinando Scianna (Universidad Complutense, El Escorial, Madrid) and Michael Wray (Universidad Complutense, El Escorial, Madrid).

His experience as a journalist started in 1987 working for the magazine Aldaba in Gernika, the cycling weekly Pedalier of Bilbao and the newspaper El Correo of Bilbao, for which he made photographic contributions while continuing his studies.

Based in Madrid since 1990, he is a photographer for El País, a newspaper for which he covers all types of current issues and makes photographic features. His photographs have been published in books and numerous international publications via the sales department of El País.

Gorka Lejarcegi is an outstanding figure in photojournalism. No small images feature in his works. From the humblest portraits to the realest of pasts, the photographic work of the Biscayan photographer always leaves a mark wherever it is published. He is a graphic reporter for El País and won the prestigious award Ortega y Gasset in 2001.

CRISTOBAL MANUEL

(Almeria, 1960)

Cristóbal Manuel works for El País covering Madrid’s everyday life, but his excellent photographic eye has earned him a passport for far-away destinations. He was commissioned to cover the plight of Haiti after the terrible earthquake in January 2010 a bit more than a year ago. He spent twenty days portraying the pain and the suffering. But Manuel was unaware that, thousands of kilometres away from home, he was going to take a magnificent photograph. Presented at the Oberta Room of La Nau Cultural Centre, his work was recently awarded the 2011 Ortega y Gasset Prize.
