The aim of the exhibition entitled TOGETHER is to offer
a simultaneous overview of the works of art carried out
by Manolo Gil and Jacinta Gil during the period
1945-1957; in other words, since the year the met until
Manolo died. They lived together all along those years
but they continued to work individually.
The paintings of Manuel Gil Pérez have been partially
exhibited in Valencia on several occasions;
after a retrospective of his work at the Instituto
Valenciano de Arte Moderno (1995), an exhibition of
his paintings in relation with the work of Rafael Pérez
Contel was held also at the IVAM. Likewise, a wide
selection of works by Jacinta Gil Roncalés was on show
at the Atarazanas of Valencia and the Lonja
del Pescado in Alicante (2000).
But these previous exhibitions have not hindered the
current project. Very much the opposite, since they have
given rise to an interest –in historiography and art
followers- in better understanding the work of both
artists.
The pieces (paintings and prints) included in TOGETHER
offer new elements for artistic enjoyment and for the
knowledge of the artists’ contributions. The exhibition
consists of 43 works. Most of them have either not been
exhibited before or were shown a long time ago. The
laborious search for the exhibits and their
identification relied on valuable cooperation from
private collectors, public institutions and cultural
organisations. Special thanks to Jacinta Gil, not only
for lending us her private collection but also for all
the documents and the oral transmission of memories and
experiences stored in her privileged memory. |
