Like other cities, Valencia has places where people
share a collective memory, that is, the things made us
what we really are. Yet, the city lacks places where
collective wishes can be shared, places where we can
express what we would like to be.
Some people see opportunities in unused spaces and know
that citizens are able to manage them and provide them
with contents.
Some open-source computer tools actually allow us to
find them and run them, identifying needs and the groups
working on this type of projects.
We can involve public administrations and ask them about
the difficulties that these management models generate,
to try and find solutions that can ensure access to
underused resources, make their use flexible and spread
this citizen boost.
POP UP VALENCIA compiles a series of projects and
processes that prove that there are work lines committed
with the city, proposals that can take everyday life to
abandoned places and arouse citizens' responsibility for
their environment, for them to overcome their daily
problems without big budgets.
These proposals make unused places visible and show
their possibilities for use and management. A dialogue
has been started with public bodies (universities, the
council, etc.) in order to boost new participation-based
management tools. In the exhibition, the outcome of this
ongoing dialogue becomes food for thought to keep on
working. |
