Introduction

At present, the world population keeps on producing waste in an uncontrolled manner. Induced obsolescence in products in general and in home objects in particular is causing resources in the planet to be used most ineffectively. Every day, hundreds of users decide that the shelf life of an object has come to hand end, and so simply chuck it, without any further thoughts on whatever happens next. This reality makes evident the need to address projects not only from an economic perspective but also on the basis of social and environmental awareness. The role of designers in this process is to share their creativity and know-how. The starting premise here is the fact that design can convey ideas, concepts and attitudes. Design to solve problems. Design for change. Design for reflection. Design for questioning reality and putting alternatives forward. What role can be played by designers in the world of overproduction? Can design influence society? Can we create thought-inducing objects? Why produce more and more when there is so much? Does it make sense to produce new objects? How should objects be?

The exhibition

REHOGAR (Re-home) has been put together by Makea Tu Vida intending to underline the potential of Design in making the most of waste as a raw material for new products, and to show that another design is possible. The exhibition suggests a tour to a habitat where all objects are made of waste: some materials are either reused or recycled, and some objects encourage us to reuse and recycle.

REHOGAR stems from a competition inviting designers, architects, artists, students, amateurs, etc. to submit their proposals for home furniture and accessories based on waste. With a group-exhibition format, the show transforms the exhibition space into a house in which all objects have been built using waste: some materials are either reused or recycled, and some objects encourage us to reuse and recycle. The aim is to rethink our homes and lifestyles, to propose practical solutions rooted in everyday life, reproducible and environmentally friendly ideas that can be easily taken to the practice. The third edition of REHOGAR 2012 is held on the occasion of the conference Disechos’12 which, with the slogan “From Design to Practice”, includes lectures, workshops, exhibitions, dialogues and afterworks in relation to design and experimentation in re-use, autonomy, interdisciplinarity and creative communities for the design new home spaces in a creative and active way.

REHOGAR 2012 includes proposals and works by Atelier Melis, System Design Studio, Arquitectura Se Mueve, Duasenzatre, Proyecto Asilo, Naranja Sureste, Forniture, Equipo Nómada, Empalm&2, Recicla2, Victoria Navarro, Alba Gil, 1Unik, Lucia Martinez Arts&Crafts, David Recalde, Paco Contreras, Franco Reyes, Laura Donate, Silvia Bolumar, Tomas Gorria, Equipo Ah!, Mercedes Moreno, Pedro Luis Carretero, Giorgio Ceste, Pilar Monteagudo, Foundcrelamps, Reutilizarte, Madre in Spain, Ana Escalante, Guido Puccioni, Maria Fiter, Cota 2.85, Las Rómulas, Taller Re, RV Disseny, Alvaro Navarro, Proyect @3, Konvertible, Alicia Fernandez, Arquiroflexia, Marisa Stinga, OOOMydesign, Vicente Pinarello, Spook Toys, La Col, ReFarm the City…

REHOGAR reinvents itself year after year in an open and participatory process.

REHOGAR stems from a competition inviting designers, architects, artists, students, do-it-yourself lovers, etc. to submit their proposals for home furniture and accessories based on waste. From the proposals submitted, Makea Tu Vida selected the pieces and projects later used in the construction of the "house" that hosts the exhibition. Under this exhibition format, a stage (a home) has been created and filled with the exhibits in a dedicated context.

Makea Tu Vida is a non-profit making cultural association with a social, artistic and educational dimension. It seeks to foster creative reuse and raise environmental awareness about waste issues in society. Its working lines are focused on design, re-use and communication. Makea Tu Vida runs the following research lines:

Development of collective and interdisciplinary participation strategies to make society more aware.

Creation of home proposals and research in new materials by means of experimentation and waste matter.

Creation of new working methods to generate user instructions for new products.

Design as a creative rather than aesthetic or added-value tool, design as the very process of creating an object, but always from an environmental viewpoint, from the idea of designing for recycling and reusing, for the use of non-hazardous and non-polluting products.

The association stands up for participatory and environmentally friendly design versus the idea of the designer as a make-up artist.

It promotes reflection and, above all, action. Humour, playing and creativity in proposing imaginative and functional proposals and as a way to fight consumerism and disposable goods. Right from the start, Makea Tu Vida developed different activities related to design and waste: lectures and talks, workshops, communication campaigns, development of strategies for the re-use promotion, meetings, etc.
