Researchers Jordi Sanjuan Belda, María del Mar Grandío and Juan Miguel Aguado, members of the European project AI-Secrett, took part on March 12, 2026 in the international workshop “Artificial Intelligence and Digital Well-being in Higher Education: Challenges, Opportunities, and Futures”, held at the University of Florence. The event brought together researchers from several European universities to discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with artificial intelligence in higher education and its impact on the digital well-being of the academic community.

In this context, Jordi Sanjuan Belda (Universitat de València) delivered a presentation titled “Perspectives on the role of AI in higher education: overcoming the dichotomy between uncritical techno-enthusiasm and crippling techno-fatalism”, reflecting on the growing role of artificial intelligence in universities and on the need to move beyond polarized views—both uncritical techno-enthusiasm and techno-fatalism—in debates about its integration into educational systems.

The workshop programme also included a keynote lecture by María del Mar Grandío (University of Murcia), entitled “Reclaiming Attention in the Age of AI: Inner Skills for Digital Wellbeing”, which addressed the skills needed to preserve digital well-being in educational environments increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence technologies. The event also featured a round table on the future of artificial intelligence and digital well-being in higher education, moderated by Juan Miguel Aguado (University of Murcia), where keynote speakers discussed key challenges and research directions related to the use of AI in universities.

During the afternoon session, a workshop and mentoring session focused on the preliminary results of the UNIWELL survey on digital well-being in European universities was held. This interactive session presented and critically discussed the first survey results and included a mentoring component aimed at designing an effective scientific dissemination and outreach plan. Participants worked on strategies to translate survey findings into impactful communication outputs for academic and international dissemination pathways, while encouraging discussion and feedback to inform the next phases of research development and strengthen the public visibility and societal impact of the UNIWELL project.

The event was organised within initiatives linked to the European university alliance EUniWell, which promotes research and collaboration on digital well-being in higher education.
