Let’s stamp out the digital gender gap!: the Valencian government takes a stand against unequal access to new technologies

The Chair for Digital Gender Gap of the University of Valencia, together with the Valencian government, highlights examples of women who have overcome gender stereotypes in ICT.

The health crisis has further sped up the digital revolution and has revealed the impact of the existing digital gap, which affects men and women differently. “Let’s stamp out the digital gender gap!” is the new campaign of the Chair for Digital Gender Gap of the University of Valencia. It aims to bridge the inequality of access and use of new technologies and highlight female role models that have broken gender stereotypes.
The COVID-19 crisis has brought about an intensive use of new technologies to maintain activity in the workplace, relationships and the education field. The negative consequences of inequality of access to new technologies have also been uncovered, which take the form of what is now called digital gap, a concept linked to discrimination and gender stereotypes.
However, the digital gender gap does not affect all women equally. Some variables that determine inequalities in accessing ICT include age, education and income level.  Therefore, one of the keys to overcoming it is ensuring universality of knowledge and tools that determine the digital skills needed nowadays.
That is why this campaign tries to highlight female role models that prove breaking the digital gender gap is possible. The story of several women who have managed to use technology effectively in their lives is told through short videos.
The first story emphasizes the importance of education and family in the first stages of life to break discriminatory ideas and encourage integration in the language of new technologies. The campaign also stresses that digital literacy is essential in later years, especially for the workplace. Lastly, the videos highlight how new technologies can open the doors to new hobbies and ways of communicating during adulthood.

About the Chair for Digital Gender Gap

The Chair was created in October 2020 and is connected to the Observatory of Digital Gap, under the Department of Innovation, Universities, Science and Digital Society of the Valencian government. The Observatory is coordinating a project, together with five universities, to end the digital gap and ensure an egalitarian society in terms of access to new technologies. In this regard, the Chair for Digital Gender Gap, related to the Office of the Vice-Principal for Innovation and Transfer, the Office of the Vice-Principal for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability and the Equality Unit, aims to address this inequality between men and women.
To this end, the Chair carries out studies about the digital gender gap in the Valencian region and organises the Conference on Digital Gender Equality. The second edition of the conference will take place soon on the occasion of International Women’s Day (March 8th).
