Difference Scores, Methodological Approaches & Polynomial regression and response surface methodology approach

This session provides an overview of the various approaches to assessing differences and the problems inherent in many of the more popular approaches. The focus will then shift to the polynomial regression and response surface methodology approach advocated by Edwards (2000, 2001) for dealing with those methodological issues. Empirical examples will be given to demonstrate the bootstrap approach to estimating significance in this approach, and to aid in interpretation of those scores and the response surfaces generated by those scores.

Theoretical applications of differences scores.

A series of papers will be discussed that demonstrate the usefulness of difference scores in operationalizing a number of interesting constructs in Industrial Organizational Psychology. Beginning with papers examining person organization fit (P-O fit)it will be demonstrated how differences between various dimensions of an individual's abilities and needs and those required and provided by their organization influence the acquisition of job knowledge, motivation and a host of other outcomes variables. Next the focus will shift to other, less common, uses of difference scores including an examination of how differences scores can be used to operationalize a new dimension of climate strength, to examine differences in rating from multiple sources, and to assess the impact of feedback . Finally the session will conclude with a discussion additional possible applications of difference scores and some predictions about the future of P-O fit research
