Presentation of the book 'Brigadistes' in Denia
On Thursday 13th May at 7.30 p.m., the book "Brigadistes. Les Brigades internacionals a Benissa i Dénia. 1937-1938" by Robert Llopis i Sendra will be presented at the Casa de Cultura of Dénia. Eladi Mainar, PhD in History from the University of Valencia, and Robert Llopis, author of the book, will take part in the event.
On 19th March 1937, in the middle of the Civil War, a small group of foreign volunteers were sent to Benissa and Dénia with the mission of setting up the first International Brigades leave centres in the Republican zone. The presence of hundreds of foreign combatants and their military hospitals had a great impact on the civilian population of these Valencian municipalities. Due to the circumstances of war, on April 9th 1938, in a tragic secret operation, the International Brigades were evacuated to Catalonia. What was the time that the International Brigades spent in Benissa and Dénia like? Who were those women and men of the international health personnel? What is left of it all? This book answers all these questions and many more. In short, an overwhelming story.
