Monday, October 18th, the Chair of Family Business (CEFUV) promoted by the Valencian Association of Entrepreneurs (AVE), the School of Entrepreneurs (EDEM), the Valencian Institute for the Study of Family Business (IVEFA), the Institute of Family Business (IEF) and the University of Valencia (UV), and which has the sponsorship of CaixaBank and Broseta,  has held a new breakfast-gathering under the title of "The seed of social and environmental commitment in family business".

Alejandro Escribá, professor at the University of Valencia and director of the Chair of Family Business (CEFUV), has introduced breakfast highlighting that one of the most important benefits that family businesses bring to the socioeconomic well-being of countries, is their roots in the territory and their commitment to the society that has seen them born and grow. Subsequently, a colloquium took place with Mireia Server (CEO of Rolser) and Enrique Choví (General Director of Choví) in which it was possible to see the importance of the ability to adapt and anticipate in order to finally be able to add value to society in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).As well as that CSR must be a responsibility of all: workers, customers, suppliers, etc. They must be aligned with the company's values.

Rolser is a family business, with more than 50 years of existence, which is committed to the development of sustainable policies that make it be at the forefront of optimizing resources, constant innovation, creativity and design that are the fundamental pillars that mark the line of work. Mireia Server wanted to highlight that Rolser's main motivation in relation to its CSR policy is related to the legacy that we will leave to the next generations, highlighting that its DNA and pride of belonging is transferred from generation to generation. They contrast each initiative that is proposed from its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, and consider key the involvement of the entire human team of the organization, whom they consider part of the family, and the involvement of customers and suppliers to achieve greater effectiveness of the measures.

"In our strategic plan, its cornerstone is CSR. All our values are reflected in this point"

Enrique Choví

70 years ago, the Choví brothers started with a small family business, which today has become a benchmark company in its sector. Its goal is to become a 100% socially responsible company. Enrique Choví has highlighted that CSR is a central part of the company's strategy and responds to the legacy left by its founder Vicente Choví: "people first". Therefore, based on this premise, in Choví CSR revolves around the integration of employees in innovation processes respecting the environment, commitment to society since they collaborate with various NGOs and the implementation of the circular economy with the use of more sustainable packaging being the first in the application of innovative technologies in this aspect,  collaborating with pioneering companies such as Repsol and Berrys Superfos.

"The fundamental engine of the Family Business are its workers"

Mireia Server

During the colloquium, the speakers addressed the motivations, the benefits it brings, the processes and the management structures involved in the CSR actions of the companies.

In the conclusions of the breakfast, the director of the Chair, Alejandro Escribá highlighted that social responsibility and the social and environmental commitment of family businesses is facilitated by the idiosyncrasy of this type of companies, in which the feeling of belonging and identity of the company, the long-term vision that involves different generations,  values and roots in the territory are part of its essence. CSR is about how profits are achieved, not so much about how they are delivered. The companies most involved are moved by their values and their commitment to the legacy they want to leave to the next generations. This approach has a real influence on their environment, and also generates a very important reputational impact for them. It also increases the sense of belonging and future involvement of future generations of the family. Among the good practices, the importance of assessing and analyzing the initiatives that are proposed has been highlighted, as well as measuring the degree of alignment with the objectives and values of the company in terms of CSR, and the results achieved. It is also important to design a formal structure to order and manage the actions, dedicating economic and human resources to the achievement of the ends.
