Last Friday, October 17th, students of the Master's Degree in Biotechnology and Biomedicine R&D visited BIOHUB VLC, an innovation and entrepreneurship center designed to strengthen the Life Sciences ecosystem in the city of Valencia. BioHub brings together Life Sciences companies and specialized service providers, with the goal of promoting their scientific and business development and building impactful projects for human health. This ambitious project has a spectacular headquarters in the Marina of Port of Valencia, where one of the buildings that hosted the America's Cup Sailing Championships has been renovated, located in the heart of La Marina de València.

Scientist and science communicator Lluís Montoliu teaches in the R&D Master's in Biotechnology and Biomedicine.

INAUGURATION OF MASTER'S DEGREE IN R&D IN BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOMEDICINE (COURSE 2025-26)

The Master's Degree in R&D in Biotechnology and Biomedicine was opened last Friday, October 3rd. The opening lecture was given by José Miguel Mulet Salort, researcher, writer, and science communicator. Full professor in the Department of Biotechnology at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, he leads a line of research at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants (IBMCP) that seeks to develop drought- and cold-tolerant plants. During his talk ("What is a Biotechnologist for?"), he offered interesting reflections on the origin and development of biotechnology, as well as some key moments in modern biotechnology, including gene editing techniques (CRISPR). He spoke about gene-edited foods, a technology that has already reached our tables, and offered an interesting final reflection: "How many things we use throughout the day are due to biotechnology that we hadn't realized?"

En aquest projecte els estudiants contacten amb algun grup d'investigació, que els informa sobre la seua activitat científica. Amb la informació rebuda, els estudiants elaboren un xicotet vídeo, com els que podeu trobar en aquesta pàgina, que esperem que us resulte d'interés i/o utilitat.

A yeast research shows how evolution has modeled different types of cell division

The Yeast Functional Genomics research group (GFL) of the Universitat de València has discovered that when a cell divides into two of different size (asymmetric division), a problem is generated in the distribution of some cellular components that are not given in cells that are symmetrically divided. The paper, published in the journal “Nucleic Acids Research”, also concludes that brewer's yeast has solved this evolutionary situation by modifying the amounts it generates from an enzyme.

El grup d’investigació de Regulació del Cicle Cel·lular en Eucariotes de la Universitat de València ha descobert que la proteïna Whi7 participa en un nou mecanisme que actua com a regulador negatiu d’Start, el punt de control més important de l’inici de la divisió cel·lular. L’estudi, publicat en la prestigiosa revista ‘Nature Communications’ i realitzat amb l’organisme model S. Cerevisiae (llevat del pa, del vi i de la cervesa), revela els paral·lelismes entre els mecanismes de control d’inici de la proliferació en llevat i en mamífers, on el paper de Whi7 el realitzen proteïnes de la família del supressor de tumors Retinoblastoma (Rb), freqüentment mutades en càncer.

A research of the Department of Microbiology and Ecology of the Universitat de València and the Institute of Food Agrochemistry and Technology of the CSIC considers that the genotype of the gene FUT2, the gut microbiota and the susceptibility to infection are key interrelated factors of the viral gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus and norovirus. The results, published in the journal ‘Scientific Reports’, suggest that biomarkers sucg as ‘Akkermansia muciniphila’ bacteria could improve the effectivenesss of the vaccines against this illness.

The Universitat de València and INCLIVA validate a new technique to treat type 1 myotonic dystrophy

Researchers from the Universitat de València and INCLIVA have validated a novel genetic method to treat type 1 myotonic dystrophy. The method would consist of the therapeutic increase of the muscleblind gene by silencing another, two specific negative regulatory miRNAs. The possible application of the results of this research would allow reducing atrophy and other muscular manifestations derived from this pathology. The study, carried out in an animal model, has been published in the scientific journal 'Scientific Reports'.
