La Universitat de València (UV) ha commemorat el vintè aniversari de la Matinal de l’Evolució, un projecte que va nàixer com a punt de trobada entre el professorat de secundària i l’Acadèmia per a l’actualització i la transferència de coneixements científics cap a la societat. L’efemèride, que enguany ha celebrat la 27a edició de l’esdeveniment, va tenir lloc a l’emblemàtic Jardí Botànic de la UV el passat cap de setmana, on es van citar científics punters com Francisco J. M. Mojica, Alba Sánchez i Jaume Pellicer, els tres formats a la Facultat de Ciències Biològiques de la UV.

La cinta reviu algunes de les més de 80 espècies trobades en este enclavament.

Amb motiu del 8 de març, Dia Internacional de la Dona Treballadora, la Unitat Docent de Geologia i el Comissió d’Igualtat de la Facultat de Ciències Biològiques de la Universitat de València impulsen l'exposició itinerant “GEAS, Mujeres que estudian la Tierra”. La mostra, concebuda pel Comité de Igualdad del Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME-CSIC) i Comisión Mujeres y Geología de la Sociedad Geológica de España (SGE) proposa un recorregut per la història de les geociències a través de dotze dones que, a més de contribuir de manera decisiva a l'avanç científic, van desafiar estereotips, desigualtats i barreres socials. Es podrà gaudir de l'exposició del 5 al 25 de març en l'Hall de la Facultat de Ciències Biològiques, Edifici B.

Un estudi de la Universitat de València (UV) i del Consell Nacional d’Investigacions Científiques i Tècniques (CONICET-l’Argentina) ha explicat l’efecte de l’extinció ocasionada en la Terra fa 252 milions d’anys. Este fet històric va provocar la desaparició de gran part de les espècies marines. Les conseqüències van impactar sobretot en les espècies locals, i únicament unes poques van ser capaces d’expandir-se per tot el planeta.

La setmana del 3 al 7 de novembre de 2025, la Universitat de València, a través de l'Àrea de Geodinàmica externa (Fac. Biologia) va rebre una nova visita dels professors Masaki Yamada, del Departament de Geologia de la Faculty of Science de Shinshu University (el Japó), i Masashi Watanabe, de la School of Ocean and Earth Science de la University of Southampton (el Regne Unit). L'objectiu principal d'esta va ser la d'actualitzar les investigacions que, en conjunt, actualment desenrotllen i la de reforçar les bases de futurs estudis destinats a comprendre la dinàmica de la DANA de 2024 i així, millorar la capacitat de predicció d'esdeveniments similars a la província de València.

La Geologia no solament és a les muntanyes, la tenim a les nostres ciutats. Encara que pot ser que no siguem conscients, estem envoltats de productes que obtenim gràcies a la Geologia. Sense ella i els recursos que aconseguim gràcies a les pràctiques geològiques el nostre món no hauria progressat en la forma en la qual el coneixem. Una bona part de l'energia que mou el transport, les factories, que ens acosta els aliments que consumim, o calfa les nostres cases prové dels combustibles fòssils o la geotèrmia. Les carreteres i vies fèrries, ports i ponts estan construïts amb ciment, asfalt, ferro i balast de roques. La teua casa està feta amb materials manufacturats a partir d'argiles, algeps, calcària, minerals de ferro, òxids d'alumini, arena, roques ornamentals i alumini.

An international team led by Rafael Marquina --postdoctoral researcher Margarita Salas from the University of Valencia (UV)-- has studied the fossil remains of small vertebrates recovered on Illa Grossa, the largest of the islands that make up the Columbretes archipelago. The paleontological study allows us to know the fauna of small vertebrates that inhabited the islet and confirms that the snakes that inhabited the archipelago were vipers. Source: Europa Press

José Ignacio Valenzuela Ríos, professor at the Department of Botany and Geology at the University of Valencia, has been appointed vice president of the International Subcommittee on Devonian Stratigraphy of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The Subcommittee studies the evolution of the Earth from the analysis of sedimentary rocks, among others, and the Devonian (between 419 and 359 million years ago) is a key period to understand the Earth’s climate changes, its causes and paleoenvironmental effects.

The Congress follows the decision of the Pander Society took in Mendoza, July 2013 to organise the next ICOS meeting in Europe. Subsequently, the International Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy (SDS) and the International Subcommission on Silurian Stratigraphy (ISSS) decided to hold the annual meeting in 2017 in Spain. Therefore, the congress will be open to all topics on conodonts and on Devonian and Silurian. In addition, it will serve as the venue for the Pander Society and the SDS, ISSS business meetings.
