There are books that have its charm because of their plot, and others that have it because of the way it makes us feel. Cavall, atleta, ocell (Periscopi) belongs mostly to the second type: a text that not only reads us, but lives with us. Manuel Baixauli brings us to a novel that does not only recount tensions between a father and a son, but it also breaks them down, observes them, and projects them in a universe where arts and life mix together.
The story revolves around Alapont and Aristides, father and son, two poles in a dance of distance and closeness, of impulse and resistance. Aristides, caught in the storm of adolescence, feels the need to break with everything that links him to home. The figure of his father, with his intent to build a future with his son, becomes a shadow to fight. We all have been once in one of both sides of this battle – sons that reject the voices that want to protect them, or fathers who try to share experiences without knowing if they can actually be inherited.
