The glyptic collection of carvings and cameos from the University of Valencia, composed, for the most part, by José Narcís Aparici’s donation in 1844, stands out for its remarkable artistic beauty and its important historical interest. Among them we can find numerous Roman pieces of high quality and samples of carvings from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. The group of carvings, vacuum engravings, corresponds mostly to antiquity. The cameos, carved in relief, clearly represent the aesthetics of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. The themes of Hellenistic taste, with the representation of gods and heroes, are complemented by other pieces with cryptic inscriptions concerning archaic religions and the so-called magical carvings, as amulets and talismans.
