The Escola Europea de Pensament Lluís Vives of the Universitat de València adapts its agenda to the online format. To inaugurate it, on Monday 25th at 6 pm, the magistrate and jurist Joaquim Bosch will give a lecture entitled 'False news and toxic lies: the limits of freedom of expression and the right to information'. The next conferences will be on June 8th with Francisco Sanz, doctor of pneumology and COVID coordinator of the Consortium Hospital General València, who will talk about the protocols of attention and treatment of the COVID-19; and on June 15th with the researcher Enrique Feás, who will deal with the economic crisis generated.
All the lectures will be available on the website of the Vice-Principal for Culture of the Universitat de València as well as in the digital repository of the Universitat de València, MediaUni, where all the lectures of the School can be accessed.
The focus of this inaugural conference will be the massive falsehoods, and how they have begun to be a problem to be debated. We are witnessing a growing phenomenon, which has had a relevant role during the health management against the pandemic. The dissemination of fake news has reached high levels due to the possibilities of social networks and the multiplier effects of fraudulent mechanisms of automated repetition. Furthermore, the media is undergoing a complex process of transformation; and has lost its monopoly on information, so that part of the citizenry is informed through channels that are not managed by professional journalists. In view of the damage that mass deception causes to society, it is necessary to analyse the most advisable actions against false news and possible conflicts with freedom of expression or the right to information.
To this end, the magistrate and jurist Joaquim Bosch will use his long career as a professional to discuss these issues. Bosch entered the judicial career by competitive examination in 2002. He has carried out his professional activity in the courts of Barcelona, Denia, Vinarós and Massamagrell. At present, he is a judge of the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 1 of Moncada, in whose judicial district he is the Chief Magistrate. He was the National Spokesperson of Judges for Democracy, between 2012 and 2016. Subsequently, he was appointed territorial spokesperson of Judges for Democracy in the Valencian Community. He is a regular contributor to several legal publications and the media. He is co-author of the book 'El secuestro de la justicia. Virtudes y problemas del sistema judicial' ('The kidnapping of justice. Virtues and problems of the judicial system'), together with the journalist Ignacio Escolar. He has carried out research and teaching activities as director and speaker of training courses for magistrates in the state plan of the General Council of the Judiciary and in the autonomous plan of the Conselleria de Justicia. He has also taken part as a speaker in many congresses and conferences at national and international level.
