Thursday 29th September the exhibition of the French artist Jean Dieuzaide was inaugurated in the Sala Tossal in Gandia. A selection of photographs that encompass the Frenchman's vision of agriculture and livestock, fishing, customs and celebrations, commerce, occupation, service and transport in the Valencia of the 1950s. This exhibition is produced and loaned by the Valencian Museum of Ethnology and can be visited until 16th October.

Dieuzaide was already a renowned photographer in 1951 when he was given an assignment that took him to Valencia. Thanks to him, it is now possible to review the way of life of Valencian society between 1951 and 1971, 20 years captured in 56 photographs. The exhibition, “El país que va fascinar Jean Dieuzaide” (Valencian for The country that enchanted Jean Dieuzaide) is organised by the International Centre of Gandia of the UV, with the collaboration of the Department of Culture and produced and loaned by the Valencian Museum of Ethnology. Visits can be made from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 8 pm.

This is how he became interested in registering what “no longer existed” in his country. What was now before his eyes was a past that only here was present, a rural society that seemed to take him back to the old pre-industrial world. Through the images we will travel through the ways of life of Valencian society between 1951 and 1971 to discover what it was like, what they did and how they lived. In this way, we will be able to reflect on and understand our recent past, to better understand the present and contribute to the construction of our future.
