Academic careers and the tenure track system in {Spain} – coexistence of state and market logics
Edward Elgar Publishing
This chapter describes the characteristics of academic careers in Spain and the complexities associated with the implementation of a ‘tenure track’ system, which is common in many other European countries. This shift to tenure track has brought some tensions and challenges due to the simultaneous existence of multiple – and often competing – institutional logics. The Spanish case epitomises these problems arising from competing pressures and expectations. In this chapter, we explore how policy reforms to the Spanish academic system resulted in the coexistence of two different academic careers models: the traditional system, which is grounded on a state logic, and the tenure track model, which is based on a market logic. We conclude by discussing the challenges raised by this situation.
