Violence as an object of study in the criminal sciences and as a subject of interest for public policies against crime has been undergoing important transformations in recent decades, both in its phenomenology and in the legal and security approach to it. Contemporary social and technological changes have a notable influence on all sectors of social relations, and violence is not excluded from these transitions.

From the very concept of violence to its association with virtualised worlds through the network of networks, including the victimisation of groups or that which is exercised from or with the connivance of institutions, this subject shows high levels of material complexity which require an in-depth reflection on the technical, normative and evaluative scope of what violence means for 21st century societies and, in particular, for those which we can include under the umbrella of the Ibero-American sphere due to its undeniable specificities.

The Congress is being held within the framework of the activities of the Red Iberoamericana de Investigadores en Política Criminal e Instituciones de la Seguridad (Spanish for Ibero-American Network of Researchers in Criminal Policy and Security Institutions), which was created under the auspices of the Ibero-American University Association for Postgraduate Studies (AUIP), an organisation that involves researchers from 13 countries who are experts in criminal policy, in collaboration with the University of Costa Rica (UCR), the University of Cadiz (UCA), the Bar Association of Costa Rica, the United Nations Latin American Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (ILANUD), the Chair for Citizen Protection-Local Police of the Universitat de València (PROTECPOL) and the direct support of the Editorial Jurídica Continental for the dissemination of the results of the congress.

Divided into six thematic panels, the organising committee invites you to submit your papers to any of the five sessions, so that the Congress can become a space for exchanging ideas and reflections on violence in contemporary societies.
