Talk: Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB). Perspectivas presentes y futuras. 28 February. Classroom 2.3 ETSE-UV 4,00 p.m.

Professor Salvador Capella (BSC) will speak about his professional career and how he has become the coordinator of the Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB).

He will speak about his contribution to the European infrastructure ELIXIR. He will also address different professional careers in the field of bioinformatics, biomedicine and computational biology from his own experience as a young researcher who has successfully reached positions of technical management and coordination.

Biography:

Salvador Capella-Gutiérrez manages the Coordination Hub of the Spanish National Bioinformatics Institute (INB) since 2016.

He is currently developing long-term infrastructures to make comparative scientific assessments and technical monitoring of bioinformatics tools, web services and workflows easier within ELIXIR. His team is responsible of the technical coordination of ELIXIR in Spain. Therefore, it is involved in several projects of bioinformatics. These projects work on scientific development of RD-Connect and BluePrint databases. It also takes part in the projects IMI eTRANSAFE and FAIRPlus.

Professor Capella-Gutiérrez doctored in bioinformatics in 2012 (CRG / UPF). He has focused in applying evolutionary methods to different omics data in order to answer biological questions.

His post-doctoral work was part of an international project of the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Institute. He developed a computational framework to obtain unique bio-indicators so that fungal pathogenic species in humans could be identified. Professor Capella-Gutiérrez optimised a protocol for extracting fungal DNA from blood samples.

Salvador Capella-Gutiérrez complemented his scientific and technological training thanks to the programme "Acelerar: Construyendo negocios desde la ciencia y la tecnología” of IE Business School.
