The recycling of multimaterial plastic products, that is, made up of different plastic materials, is key to meeting the recycling targets for 2031 set by the European Commission, which establish that more than 50% of the plastic waste generated in Europe must be recycled, which is well above the 32.5% achieved in 2018.

entomoplast

Description

Title: Insect microbiomes as a tool for the recovery of plastic waste from multilayer packaging

Research group: Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology

In fact, currently, the demand for recycled plastic only represents around 6% of the total demand for plastic in Europe and investments in new recycling capacities have been held back by the poor profitability prospects of the sector.

The general objective of the ENTOMOPLAST project is to take a definitive step in the recycling of multi-material packaging, thus promoting the circular economy in the plastics sector.

ENTOMOPLAST is focused on the use of insects for the degradation of plastic and obtaining recycled materials of biological origin with high added value, which will allow to increase the recycling rates of multimaterial packaging in a profitable way.
