The article “From public service to regulated market: Services of General Economic Interest (SGEI) as an instrument of transformation” has been accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of the Revista de Estudios Regionales.

This article analyses the concept of Service of General Economic Interest (SGEI) and its repercussions in the domestic sphere, both in domestic legislation and in the actions of public administrations.

The term 'SGEI' has been coined at the European level to establish a common nomenclature that includes the different formulas and solutions that states have established and are establishing to guarantee the satisfaction of general interests and make them compatible with the principles of the internal market and free competition.

The concept of 'SGEI' does not designate new legal figures or instruments, but seeks to establish a common nomenclature for all states, capable of bringing together the legal traditions that have been applied by states to satisfy general interests and make them compatible with the requirements of an internal market.

In our legal system, the concept of 'SGEI' designates the new legal reality that replaces the concept of public service in the internal sphere and which implies the harmonisation of the mechanisms foreseen for the satisfaction of general interests with the requirements of free competition and the rules of the internal market.

The Revista de Estudios Regionales is published by the Universities of Andalusia and its main objective is to be a channel for the dissemination of unpublished scientific studies on regional matters in the field of social sciences. The periodicity of the Journal is three issues per year, the next issue will include the article “From public service to regulated market: Services of General Economic Interest (SGEI) as an instrument of transformation”, written by María Jesús García García, tenured professor of Administrative Law at the Universitat de València and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair.
