The Universitat de València has improved its position and is listed as the second-best in Spain according to the Shanghai ranking published last Thursday. The UV is now in 201-300 bracket of this university ranking, where no other Spanish institution is listed. The only other Spanish university ranked higher than the UV, is the University of Barcelona, which is in the 151-200 bracket.

The Shanghai Ranking Consultancy is one of the most popular university ranking systems worldwide. The universities are categorised into brackets, and within those brackets the institutions are listed alphabetically.

The University of Barcelona is in the 151-200 bracket, moving up from the 201-300 bracket in 2023. The Universitat de València also improved its ranking, moving up from the 301-400 bracket in 2023 to the 201-300 this year.

The list analyses six indicators: number of students winning a Nobel Prize or a Fields Medal (10%); professors with a Nobel Prize or Fields medal (20%); research citations (20%), scientific articles in Nature and Science (20%); academic performance per capita (10%); and projects in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Science Citation (20%).

In the 2024 edition, the University of Jiao Tong of Shanghai analysed more than 2,500 higher educational institutions and shared the top 1,000 scorers.

For 22 consecutive years, Harvard has topped this classification, followed by Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of technology (MIT). Other institutions in the top ten include: Cambridge (4), Berkeley (5), Oxford (6), Princeton (7), Caltech (8), Columbia (9) and the University of Chicago (10).

In Spain, following the University of Barcelona and the UV, in lower brackets, are the Autonomous Universities of Barcelona and Madrid, the Complutense of Madrid and the Pompeu Fabra in the 301-400 bracket; the University of Granada in the 301-400 (a lower position than the 201-300 ranking in 2023); the University of País Vasco (301-400, moving up from 401-500); the UPV (401-500, same as 2023) and the University of Sevilla ranked in the 401-500 bracket (jumping up from 501-600).
