The progress of medical knowledge is one of the most relevant facts in the history of humanity. Nevertheless, and despite the great scientific progress, there still are many problems to be solved; therefore it is necessary to focus efforts on fighting diseases, health organisation, and efficient use of resources or search for scientific evidence during decision-making.

This drift has led to the phasing out of the personal and transcendent dimension of the professional practice of medicine focusing on the patient. And both patients and professionals and, furthermore, society as a whole, are aware of this lack. This is why it has aroused a new concept called Patient-Focused Medicine, which is focused on the integration of scientific and human aspects in the professional activity.

But if we defend a medicine focused on the patient, how do we approach the training of the future doctor focusing it on the patient? What should we do in the new curricula? Is it necessary to incorporate competences that have not been considered so far?

Medical Education focused on the patient is a challenge. It means to impregnate the model with a humanist education, to complete contents with those coming from medical humanism and define, acquire and evaluate the skills that come from it.

For all this, it is necessary to make future doctors competent in fields that have not been usual in curricular contents so far. The 11th Meeting on Medical Education 2017 was oriented to reflect and share the model of teaching of medicine focused on the patient, its profile and the characteristics that define it.
